Vital Statistics are birth, death, marriage and civil union certificates.Because of the confidential nature of birth records, Illinois Statutes provide that copies may be obtained only by the person himself (if of legal age), a parent, or other legal representative. Marshall County birth records date back to1867. Genealogical birth records may be obtained if the record is more than 75 years old.

Death certificate records date back to 1877. Death Certificates may be obtained by any party with a legitimate interest. Genealogical death records must be on file at least 20 years before release.

Marriage records date back to 1839. A certified copy may be obtained by either the bride or the groom. Genealogical copies may be given if the marriage record has been on file for longer than 50 years.

Please note: Absolutely no information can be given over the telephone regarding Vital Records. Under Illinois State Law (410 ILCS 535-Vital Records Act) only specific individuals have legal access to birth, death, civil union or marriage certificates. The Marshall County Clerk’s office will issue certificates to authorized individuals only. To do otherwise is a violation of Illinois Law. Vital Records are not considered public information, nor are they subject to the Freedom of Information Act.
